Back during the energy crisis of the 1970s, solar power products were rather large, inefficient creations that really didn’t do a whole lot for spreading the popularity of this form of sustainable energy. Although the crisis came and went, the focus on solar development did not. In fact, thanks to decades’ worth of diligence in research, solar power products today are smaller, more efficient and even portable by design.
Anyone who scans the market for solar power products today will find a number of designs in use and more under development. Some of the types of products available for use now include:
• Portable solar power products – These self-contained systems are designed for the ultimate in portability. They can be small enough by make to be worn on a wrist or carried in a backpack. Hikers and campers, for example, will find a variety of portable solar devices for their use. Items in this classification range from solar watches and flashlights to radios and even cellular telephone charges.
• Solar power kits – Although these might not be the model of efficiency, this solar product can demonstrate the feasibility of solar power very well. Small kits are capable of generating enough energy to operate minor household appliances, such as electrical tools and toasters.
• Outdoor appliance products – Solar power products extend to self-contained systems for use outside homes. These devices include solar driven lights, surveillance cameras, water fountains and so on.
• Home solar arrays – Home-based solar power products for providing larger amounts of energy have come a very long way. Although these systems do still depend a lot on costly silicon for the solar panels, they can produce the power homeowners need. Depending on the actual energy requirements, homeowners can offset certain systems in their homes or even go off the electrical grid entirely. How much or little power a homeowner can enjoy thanks to more modernized technology will depend on the system design, the amount of available sunlight and the size of the solar collection system, the efficiency of the inverter and so on.
As far as solar power products have come, research continues to make this type of sustainable energy collection even more efficient. Researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, for example, have been working on solar dish technology for taking buildings off the electrical grid. Larger dishes are already in use, helping augment the electrical supply within areas of the American Southwest. Researchers are also working to improve the design of solar panels to rely on less costly semiconductor materials. This would make solar energy systems more attainable by the masses.
Solar power products have taken great leaps forward in the last few decades. This sustainable form of energy is now relied upon to power everything from small wrist watches to entire homes

As discussions about the need to wean off of fossil fuels become even more serious, many people are looking into alternative energy sources for their homes and business operations. Solar power systems are a popular option around the world for good reason. These systems, however, can range rather greatly in size and complexity.
The different types of solar power systems available include:
• Small cell systems – The popularity of solar power systems to power a single device are becoming very popular. Examples of this type of system abound and include such things as wrist watches, portable radios and flashlights and even camping equipment. This type of solar power system is generally very small and self-contained.
• Limited use solar panel arrays for home use – Home use solar power systems are generally designed for limited use. This means they are meant to power specific systems within a home. For example, a solar power array might be designed to take an air conditioning system or pool water heater off of the electrical grid. This type of system generally involves solar panels on one portion of a roof.
• Self-contained home systems – This type of system is most commonly used in remote locations. A fully self-contained solar power system that can run an entire household or office can provide all necessary power when getting on the electrical grid isn’t feasible. This type of system will generally involve a much larger solar panel array than a limited design. Self-contained systems are becoming more popular in residential areas where electrical access is also available.
• Solar dish – Solar power systems that are created using dishes that are similar to satellite dishes are becoming quite popular for portable use and even in collection fields used by power companies to offset their own use of fossil fuel driven electricity. This type of system involves collection of the sun’s rays using a device that can be moved to absorb the maximum amount of energy during daylight hours. On the portable end, this type of system is frequently used by campers and RV enthusiasts. Larger systems are rather cost prohibitive for individual owners to put in place. Inasmuch, they are used by power companies instead.
• Solar fields – Solar fields are exactly what they sound like. This type of set up, reserved for power company use, involves the creation of a large number of solar arrays to collect the sun’s energy during daylight. A solar field might include stationary panels, solar dishes or a combination thereof.
Solar power systems are showing their benefits more and more. As the limited nature of fossil fuels becomes very evident, harnessing this type of renewable energy is becoming very attractive on the small scale and even in large scale projects.

The concept of using solar power for homes has come a long way in a relatively short period of time. Although solar power has been used for ages, systems designed to replace or augment electrical use are only now just catching on in a very big way. In general there are three main system types for home use. Each can have a major and positive impact on how well a home functions.
The systems that provide solar power for homes all operate off the same principles. These systems are designed to use solar panels or modules in an array design to absorb energy from the sun’s rays. This energy is transformed within the panels to create direct current electricity. The electricity created by the panels is then sent to an inverter for transformation into alternating current. This AC power is then stored in a battery for future use. The three basic systems that drive solar power for homes vary in design and function. They include:
• Full, off-grid systems – As energy costs climb, more homeowners are exploring this option. It is feasible for solar power for homes to take a property completely off the electrical grid. How efficient this type of system will actually be will depend on its location, the amount of sunlight received, the design and the efficiency of the individual components. To make solar power for homes more reliable, many builders are exploring energy saving measures that can coincide with their use. This can include strategic positioning of a home to provide the best insulation, landscaping for shade and other similar moves that would cut demand for power within an off-grid home.
• Augmentation systems – Most solar power for homes comes in this form. This type of system is meant to power a specific system within a home – not the entire home. Solar systems, for example, might be self-contained devices that operate outside lights, or water heaters. Some systems are designed to completely power heating and cooling systems. This type of system can take a lot of the pressure of powering a home off the electrical system and put money back in a homeowner’s wallet.
• Backup systems – Solar power for homes can also extend to backup systems, such as sun-powered generators. This type of system works much like an augmentation system in that it might not be designed to keep a home completely functional when backup is needed. Backup systems are ideal, for example, for running heating, cooling or refrigeration systems during a blackout.
Solar power for homes has improved greatly over the last few decades. More and more homeowners are realizing that the sun’s power can helps make their homes more energy efficient and environmentally friendly. In the process, these systems can also save homeowners money in electric costs.

As energy costs go up and environmental concerns continue to rise, many people are exploring home solar power systems. These devices can and do work very well, but there are some pros and cons that can come along with them.
Home solar power systems can vary rather greatly in size and capacity. They all operate using the same basic components, however. These include such things as solar panels to collect the sun’s energy, inverters to transform it into usable power and batteries to store harvested power for future use. The efficiency and ability to power systems within a home will depend on the actual components used in a design.
The Pros Of Home Solar Power Systems
Home systems both large and small can bring with them a number of advantages. In most cases, systems do eventually pay for themselves thanks to cost savings on electric. The pros for this type of solar system include:
• Offset of electrical use – Home solar power systems even in small designs do offset the amount of non-sustainable energy that a particular residence uses. This can help conserve fossil fuels and make a home more self-sufficient.
• Cost savings – For every kilowatt hour home solar power systems save, homeowners realize a real cost benefit. How much this will equate to will depend on the actual offset and the prices currently charged by an electric or gas company.
• Environmental impact – Home solar power systems are designed to operate using sustainable energy. The sun’s power is not something humans can deplete. In addition to this very green perk, solar power is also cleaner to harvest and use than fossil fuel-based energy.
The Cons Of A Solar System
Although home solar power systems can be very beneficial for people to consider, there are some potential cons that go along with the prospect. They include:
• Initial costs – Depending on how large a system a homeowner is looking at, the costs involved can be rather high. This can make it very difficult for some homeowners to afford the initial investment.
• Efficiency – Home solar power systems do sometimes have issues with efficiency. This can hinge a lot on the design of the system, the amount of sunlight available and the positioning of the solar panels to take advantage of available daytime hours.
• Space requirements – If a system is desired to completely replace electric, the amount of space required for a solar array might be prohibitive.
Home solar power systems can greatly offset electrical use and sometimes even replace it. These systems provide a greener way to power a residence. They do, however, have a few pros and cons attached to them.

As gas prices skyrocket, attention is focusing on alternative sources of energy to power vehicles. One option that many are exploring involves solar power cars. Although they have their share of problems, this mode of transportation is already feasible and improvements are likely to only make the prospect more appealing to drivers.
Unfortunately at the present time, solar power cars do have their share of problems. When the pros and cons of current vehicles are looked at, it is clear why they haven’t yet gone into mass production. With further research, however, it is hoped solar power cars might provide the solution to fossil fuel driven vehicles.
The Cons Of Solar Cars
Solar power cars operate using a combination of solar power and regular electricity to charge batteries. Hybrids involve both battery power and some fuel source, such as ethanol or plain gasoline. The current limitations of this type of vehicle include:
• Limited charge capacity – The solar power collection system on many solar models today lacks the capacity that drivers demand. In some cases, these vehicles can only go a few miles before their charges wear out. Hybrids do, of course, offer more mileage due to their gas burning ability, but they sacrifice the full environmental benefits that a 100 percent solar driven vehicle would bring to the table.
• Reliance on electric charging – Since the sun’s power isn’t always available for charging batteries, there is still a need to rely on regular electric to augment solar battery charging.
• Speed – There are some issues with current models of solar cars in relation to maximum speeds. These cars, although street legal in most designs, cannot generally reach speeds of over 40 miles per hour. This does tend to hamper the desirability of the design.
The Advantages Of Solar Cars
While few people deny a need for further research and major improvements in regard to solar power cars, the concept is not without its merits. If a faster, longer-traveling model were created, the pros of this kind of car would include:
• Lowered environmental impacts – Unlike fossil-fuel driven vehicles, solar cars do not produce the greenhouse gases that combustion engines create.
• Economic advantage – If a solar model were created that provided enough efficiency, the cost savings in gasoline alone could be quite impressive.
Solar power cars are not on every street corner at the moment for a reason. Despite some flaws, however, this concept is gaining much attention. Research and development could very well prove to make this type of car the vehicle of the future.

The concept of collecting solar power in space is nothing new, but It’s an idea that has yet to be fully tested due to a number of compelling factors. This idea dates back to the 1960s and is garnering further attention today as the limited supply of fossil fuels continues to dwindle and costs related to its consumption continue to go up.
Solar power in space would operate in much the same manner as a system on earth. For example, a satellite solar system would involve a series of solar collectors that would be designed to absorb energy from the sun’s rays. This power would then be transformed within the collection system for transmission to earth using a microwave transmission that would be received by an antenna. This power, in turn, would be usable for regular electrical use by plugging it into the electrical grid.
The potential advantages of collecting solar power in space include:
• Greater collection capacity – A collection system in space would be able to function without an obstructed view of the sun. If the satellite system were put into place in a high earth orbit, atmospheric issues realized on earth would not impede collection.
• Avoidance of seasonal problems – Solar power in space brings the advantage of not being seasonally impacted. This type of system could operate year round without concern about weather or even day or night cycles.
• Capacity – A well-designed collection system in space could have a very high production capacity due to the lack of impediments.
As intriguing as solar power in space sounds, this concept has yet to be fully tested for a number of reasons. Unfortunately, it does deliver a few cons that must be overcome before this idea is fully embraced. They include:
• Construction costs – At this time, the creation of a full system for solar energy collection in space has been deemed too expensive to pursue.
• Launch costs – The potential costs of launching a solar power in space satellite system are also prohibitive. In addition, system maintenance could further add to costs.
• Space debris – While a collection system in space would have an unobstructed view of the sun for collection, it would not be free from potential hazards. This type of collection system could be damaged and even rendered useless by space debris.
Solar power in space is an idea that hasn’t quite gone away. Although it is considered too costly to pursue at this time, many researchers think as fossil fuel supplies continue to dwindle, this concept will reemerge as a viable alternative.

Outdoors lovers can go green in a big way without having to give up on the creature comforts of home. Thanks to portable solar power devices, the gadgets and gizmos that make camping a little more “civilized” can be used without having to rely on fossil fuels along the way.
Portable solar power devices for camping or even home use are really starting to take off in regard to variety. These devices can differ a bit in how they work, but most operate using either single solar cell technology or small module systems that drive batteries to provide energy to the devices. Some of the options that outdoors enthusiasts can now take into the woods without having to bring propane, replaceable batteries or even charcoal along to power them include:
• Watches – Although becoming quite in style for everyday use, wristwatches for campers, hikers and athletes that are powered by the sun are becoming quite popular. These portable solar power devices soak up the sun’s rays during the day to charge batteries that enable their use around the clock. In a similar vein, many campers are also discovering solar powered alarm clocks for helping them get up on time while they are miles from home.
• Radios – Portable solar power radio/flashlight combinations are becoming very popular for camping and even emergency use. In some cases, these radios are designed to capture emergency broadcast signals, but others will receive an array of AM or FM channels.
• Lanterns – Solar powered lanterns are perfect for camping use. Rather than having to worry about batteries going dead, campers can charge these devices all day long and use them at night.
• Cook stoves and grills – Solar powered cooking equipment is widely used for camping and other applications. This type of equipment might range from devices made to work only during the day, such as solar barbecue grills, to those that soak up rays during the daylight hours for charging batteries that allow cooking at night.
• GPS systems – These little devices are often a camper’s best friend whether they are solar powered or not. The solar powered systems operate much like watches as far as energy gathering is concerned.
• Cell phone battery chargers – Solar powered battery chargers are now designed to make sure cell phones have power no matter where a person happens to be. This can be an important tool for campers to have along in case of an emergency.
Portable solar power devices are changing the face of camping. It is now possible to get back to nature and still enjoy the comforts of home. The best part is these devices still enable campers to go green in the process.
